Stephenson’s Rocket incorporated several innovative features that set it apart from earlier locomotives, including:

1. **Multi-tubular boiler**: Stephenson’s Rocket was equipped with a multitubular boiler, which featured multiple small-diameter tubes through which hot gases from the firebox passed. This design increased the heating surface area, improving steam generation and overall efficiency.

2. **Direct-drive mechanism**: The locomotive employed a direct-drive mechanism, with the cylinders driving the wheels directly through a system of rods and cranks. This design provided better traction and power delivery compared to earlier locomotives with separate driving wheels.

3. **Variable exhaust**: Stephenson’s Rocket featured a variable exhaust system controlled by a lever operated by the driver. This allowed the locomotive to adjust steam pressure and optimize performance based on operating conditions.

4. **Improved firebox**: The locomotive’s firebox was designed to burn coke, a cleaner and more efficient fuel compared to coal. This helped reduce smoke and pollution, making the locomotive more suitable for passenger service.

Stephenson’s Rocket proved to be the most successful design at the Rainhill Trials, demonstrating its superior performance, reliability, and efficiency. It achieved a top speed of 29 miles per hour (47 kilometers per hour) during the trials, far surpassing the requirements set by the competition.
