NCERT is a significant name in the field of Indian school education. The full form of NCERT is The National Council of Educational Research and Training. It is an autonomous organisation set up in the year of 1961 by the Government of India. Headquartered in Delhi, NCERT was actually established in the purpose of qualitative improvement of the school education.

NCERT serves to many purposes of the CBSE students such as publishing model textbooks, supplementary materials, educational kits, multimedia digital materials etc. Apart from CBSE, many state boards also refer to NCERT textbooks. When was NCERT established?

With the aim of qualitative improvement of school education, NCERT or National Council of Educational Research and Training was founded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India on July 27, 1961. But the organisation officially started functioning as an autonomous body from September 1, 1961.

How is NCERT formed?

NCERT was basically formed to structure and support the common education system in India while emphasizing on the diverse culture of the country.

This autonomous body was established by merging seven existing government organizations –

  1. Central Institute of Education (1947)
  2. Central Bureau of Textbook Research (1954)
  3. Central Bureau of Educational and Vocational Guidance (1954)
  4. Directorate of Extension Programmes for Secondary Education (1958)
  5. National Institute of Basic Education (1956)
  6. National Fundamental Education Centre (1956)
  7. National Institute of Audio-Visual Education (1959).

Functions of NCERT

Established as a literary, scientific and charitable society under Societies’ Registration Act 1961, NCERT focuses upon the improvement of the Early Childhood Education, National Curriculum Framework, Girl child education, Elementary education, Vocational education etc.

Besides, NCERT also designs the syllabi for each class and publishes the textbooks as well. NCERT textbooks are so well designed that these are considered as one of the best resources for all the students from Class 1 to Class 12. These books are also recommended for students who are preparing for the National level Engineering and Medical entrance examinations such as JEE Main, NEET etc.

Objectives of NCERT

The major objectives of the National Council of Educational Research and Training are:

  • To promote and conduct research in areas related to school education
  • To develop the National Curriculum Framework, syllabi, and textbooks; teaching-learning materials and kits; training models, audio-video materials.
  • To prepare and publish model textbooks, supplementary material, newsletters, journals and develop educational kits, multimedia digital materials, etc.
  • To organise service training of teachers; develop and disseminate innovative educational techniques and practices.
  • To act as a decision taker for the matters related to school education.
