National Updates

• Campaigning for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and for first phase in West Bengal came to an end this evening. Single-phase polling in Tamil Nadu and the first phase of voting in West Bengal is scheduled for the 23rd of April.

• The Ministry of Defence signed contracts for the procurement of TRAWL Assembly for T-72 and T-90 Tanks at a cost of around 975 crore rupees. The contracts were signed with Bharat Earth Movers Limited and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt. Limited in the presence of Defence Secretary.

• The Indian Army on Tuesday asserted its resolve to fight against terrorism on the eve of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack. On 22nd of April last year, terrorists killed 26 innocent people, mostly tourists, at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir.

• India has highlighted the need for greater representation of the Global South, particularly in the permanent category in the United Nations Security Council. Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Sibi George stated this while delivering India’s national statement at the Inter-Governmental platform.

• The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship convened a Capacity Building and Review Workshop under the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) on the theme of Viksit Gaon for Viksit Bharat in New Delhi on Tuesday.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Rumen Radev and his party, Progressive Bulgaria, for their victory in the recently concluded parliamentary elections of Bulgaria.

• John Ternus is set to become the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Apple, succeeding Tim Cook, who will step down on 1st of September this year. Tim Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors. Mr Cook will continue in his role as CEO through the summer.

• US Department of War announced that, American forces have boarded an oil tanker previously sanctioned for smuggling Iranian crude oil in Asia. In a social media post, the Pentagon said US forces conducted a right-of-visit maritime interdiction and boarded the Crude Oil vessel ‘Tifani’.

• US President Donald Trump said he will start bombing Iran if they do not agree to a deal with the United States before the end of the two-week ceasefire today.

• North Korea and Russia held a ceremony to mark the linking of a cross-border road bridge over the Tumen River. The Russian Embassy in North Korea on Tuesday said, the bridge is set for completion on 19th June. The two countries began constructing the road bridge in April last year.

• Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that if the Lebanese government continues to fail to meet its commitments under the ceasefire agreement, the Israeli military will act through further military action. Mr Katz was speaking at the national Memorial Day ceremony for fallen soldiers.

Sports Updates

• The semi-final match of the Under-19 India-Nepal Deaf Cricket Tournament, organized by the Jharkhand Deaf Cricket Association, was played on the second day at Jiyalgoda Stadium in Dhanbad. Nepal batted first and scored 105 runs, while the Indian team successfully chased the target with eight wickets.

• तमिलनाडु में विधानसभा चुनाव और पश्चिम बंगाल में पहले चरण के लिए प्रचार अभियान आज शाम समाप्त हो गया। तमिलनाडु में एकल चरण का मतदान और पश्चिम बंगाल में मतदान का पहला चरण २३ अप्रैल को निर्धारित है।
• रक्षा मंत्रालय ने लगभग 975 करोड़ रुपये की लागत से टी-72 और टी-90 टैंकों के लिए टीआरएडब्ल्यूएल असेंबली की खरीद के लिए अनुबंध पर हस्ताक्षर किए। रक्षा सचिव की उपस्थिति में भारत अर्थ मूवर्स लिमिटेड और इलेक्ट्रो न्यूमेटिक्स एंड हाइड्रोलिक्स (इंडिया) प्राइवेट लिमिटेड के साथ अनुबंध पर हस्ताक्षर किए गए।
• भारतीय सेना ने मंगलवार को पहलगाम आतंकी हमले की पहली बरसी की पूर्व संध्या पर आतंकवाद के खिलाफ लड़ने के अपने संकल्प पर जोर दिया। पिछले वर्ष 22 अप्रैल को आतंकवादियों ने जम्मू-कश्मीर के पहलगाम में 26 निर्दोष लोगों की हत्या कर दी थी, जिनमें अधिकतर पर्यटक थे।

• उत्तर कोरिया और रूस ने तुमेन नदी पर सीमा पार सड़क पुल को जोड़ने के उपलक्ष्य में एक समारोह आयोजित किया। उत्तर कोरिया स्थित रूसी दूतावास ने मंगलवार को कहा कि पुल का निर्माण कार्य 19 जून को पूरा हो जाएगा। दोनों देशों ने पिछले साल अप्रैल में सड़क पुल का निर्माण शुरू किया था।
