National Updates

  • Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, discussed various issues pertaining to bilateral relations as well as regional developments in Dubai.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth over 2 lakh crore rupees in Andhra Pradesh from Visakhapatnam.
  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the special song of Akashvani and Doordarshan, dedicated to Mahakumbh 2025, in New Delhi.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his counterpart of Maldives Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon reviewed the various facets of bilateral defence cooperation including training, regular military exercises, and defence projects.
  • The first meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on two bills related to the One Nation One Election was held in New Delhi. The Bills are officially named as the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
  • Chief of the Air Staff Amar Preet Singh attended the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Republic Day Camp 2025 in New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Singh said that NCC is doing a commendable job in bringing the nation together.
  • Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has said that around 1.80 lakh deaths occurred due to road accidents in 2024.

International Updates

  • The Central Bank of Sri Lanka, has announced key priorities for the coming year for the crisis-stricken island’s economy. The Central Bank released the policy agenda for 2025 where it emphasised inflation stabilization at the 5% target under the Flexible Inflation Targeting (FIT) framework.
  • An Italian journalist Cecilia Sala detained in Iran since 19 December has been freed and is heading back to Italy.
  • In the USA, Los Angeles has declared a state of emergency as three wildfires exploded from 10 acres to more than 2,900 acres within hours. Local media reports that significant landmarks, community buildings, and businesses have been damaged or destroyed by the fires.
  • Ukrainian forces carried out a mass drone attack on Russia’s Saratov region, causing damage to an industrial enterprise. The General Staff of Ukraine’s military said its forces hit a Russian oil depot in Engels that provides fuel to the airbase.
  • India and the European Union reiterated their commitment to the shared principles and values of democracy, freedom, rule of law and to the promotion and protection of all Human Rights during 11th India – European Union Human Rights Dialogue in New Delhi.
  • In the US, two Indian-Americans, Kannan Srinivasan and J.J. Singh, were elected in special elections to Virginia’s state legislatures . Srinivasan was elected to the State Senate, while Singh was elected to the seat in the State House of Delegates.
  • In Bangladesh, eight individuals, including five members of the same family, were detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while attempting to enter India illegally through the Birampur border.

Sports Updates

  • In Badminton, India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Castro have advanced to the Mixed Doubles Pre-quarterfinals at the Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur.
  • India is all set to participate with its largest-ever contingent at the India Open Super 750 badminton tournament, starting on the 14th of January at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall of Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi.
  • Asian Games champion in Men’s Shot Put, Bahadur Singh Sagoo, has been elected as the new President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
