Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria

Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria was an Indian soldier awarded the Param Vir Chakra। He received this honor posthumously in 1961। Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria is named among the warriors who bravely sacrificed their lives against Belgium in favor of Congo along with the United Nations peacekeeping force, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his amazing bravery while fighting at Elizabeth Villa on 5 December 1961। He was only 26 years old at the time।
Biography: Gurbachan Singh was born on 29 November 1935 in Janwal village of Shakargarh। This place is now in Pakistan। His father was also a soldier and was posted at Hudson House, Dogra Squadron of the British-Indian Army। His mother was a courageous woman and was engaged in building the future of her children while running the household very smoothly। Stories of his father’s bravery also attracted Gurbachan Singh towards military life। It was because of this attraction that Gurbachan entered the King George Royal Military College in Bangalore in 1946। He transferred to Jalandhar branch of the same college in August 1947। In 1953, he reached the National Defense Academy and passed through there and joined the army with the rank of corporal। There too he created his image in the same way as he did in school, that is, he was considered a soldier very conscious of self-respect।
Once a student tried to harass him। He was a strong looking boy but on this issue Gurbachan Singh challenged him for boxing। The match was decided। Everyone was feeling that Gurbachan Singh would lose, but despite the promptness with which Gurbachan Singh punched inside the ring, even that skilled opponent could not stand still and Gurbachan Singh won। Once a poor boy fell into a well, Gurbachan Singh was there। He felt pity for the child and agreed to jump into the well to save him, even though he himself did not know how to swim। Well his colleagues stopped him from doing so।

कैप्टन गुरबचन सिंह सालारिया परमवीर चक्र से सम्मानित भारतीय सैनिक थे। इन्हें यह सम्मान सन 1961 में मरणोपरांत मिला। संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ की शांति सेना के साथ कांगो के पक्ष में बेल्जियम के विरुद्ध बहादुरी पूर्वक प्राण न्योछावर करने वाले योद्धाओं में कैप्टन गुरबचन सिंह सालारिया का नाम लिया जाता है जिन्हें 5 दिसम्बर 1961 को एलिजाबेथ विला में लड़ते हुए अद्भुत पराक्रम दिखाने के लिए मरणोपरांत परमवीर चक्र दिया गया। वह उस समय केवल 26 वर्ष के थे।
जीवन परिचय : गुरबचन सिंह का जन्म 29 नवम्बर 1935 को शकरगढ़ के जनवल गाँव में हुआ था। यह स्थान अब पाकिस्तान में है। इनके पिता भी फौजी थे और ब्रिटिश-इंडियन आर्मी के डोगरा स्क्वेड्रन, हडसन हाउस में नियुक्त थे। इनकी माँ एक साहसी महिला थीं तथा बहुत सुचारू रूप से गृहस्थी चलाते हुए बच्चों का भविष्य बनाने में लगी रहती थीं। पिता के बहादुरी के किस्सों ने गुरबचन सिंह को भी फौजी जिंदगी के प्रति आकृष्ट किया। इसी आकर्षण के कारण गुरबचन ने 1946 में बैंगलोर के किंग जार्ज रॉयल मिलिट्री कॉलेज में प्रवेश लिया। अगस्त 1947 में उनका स्थानांतरण उसी कॉलेज की जालंधर शाखा में हो गया। 1953 में वह नैशनल डिफेंस अकेडमी में पहुँच गये और वहाँ से पास होकर कारपोरल रैंक लेकर सेना में आ गए। वहाँ भी उन्होंने अपनी छवि वैसी ही बनाई जैसी स्कूल में थी यानी आत्म सम्मान के प्रति बेहद सचेत सैनिक माने गए।
एक बार इन्हें एक छात्र ने तंग करने की कोशिश की। वह एक तगड़ा सा दिखने वाला लड़का था लेकिन इसी बात पर गुरबचन सिंह ने उसे बॉक्सिंग के लिए चुनौती दे डाली। मुकाबला तय हो गया। सबको यही लग रहा था कि गुरबचन सिंह हार जायेंगे, लेकिन रिंग के अंदर उतरकर जिस मुस्तैदी से गुरबचन सिंह ने मुक्कों की बरसात की, उसके आगे वह कुशल प्रतिद्वंद्वी भी ठहर नहीं पाया और जीत गुरबचन सिंह की हुई। एक बार एक बेचारा लड़का कुएँ में गिर गया, गुरबचन सिंह वहीं थे। उन्हें बच्चे पर तरस आया और वह उसे बचाने को कुएँ में कूदने को तैयार हो गये, जबकि उन्हें खुद भी तैरना नहीं आता था। खैर उनके साथियों ने उन्हें ऐसा करने से रोक लिया।
