Build a Better Vocabulary-3

1. FLACCID (ADJECTIVE): drooping or weak
Synonyms: enfeebled, resilient
 
Antonyms: taut, firm
Example Sentence: The patient’s condition is appearing as flaccid as at first.
 
 
2. CHICANERY (NOUN): dishonesty or fraud
Synonyms: Intrigue, machination Antonyms: forthrightness, truthfulness.
 
Example Sentence:
You can smell the chicanery from a dishonest politician.
 
 
3. WINTRY (ADJECTIVE): cold or snowy.
Synonyms: bleak, frigid Antonyms: cheerful, heated
Example Sentence: The weather was already growing wintry and morning frosts congealed an earth saturated by autumn rains.
4. UNCOUTH (ADJECTIVE): clumsy or ill-mannered
 
Synonyms: boorish, barbaric Antonyms: agile, refined
Example Sentence: He disliked the uncouth style of the Scriptures.
5. BETROTHED (ADJECTIVE): engaged or promised to be married
Synonyms: affianced, committed Antonyms: single, unattached
Example Sentence: The father and the mother came into the room and gave the betrothed couple their blessings.
6. MISCELLANY (NOUN): varied collection or mixture
 
Synonyms: accumulation, conglomeration Antonyms: uniformity, singularity
Example Sentence: Bleaching, brewing and brass-founding are carried on, as well as a large miscellany of manufactures.
7. ABRASIVE (ADJECTIVE): irritating in manner or annoying
Synonyms: caustic, nasty Antonyms: calm, pleasant
Example Sentence: He wasn’t just abrasive, he was also incompetent.
 
 
8. FURORS (NOUN): a state of confusion
 
Synonyms: ballyhoo, bustle Antonyms: calm, quietude
Example Sentence: His brilliant playing created a furore which went to almost extravagant lengths of admiration.
 
 
9. STRATUM (NOUN): layer or level
Synonyms: gradation, lamina Antonyms: clot, vertex
 
Example Sentence: It is made of stratum of clay.
 
 
10. VISAGE (NOUN): appearance or a human face
Synonyms: countenance, aspect Antonyms: reality, truth
Example Sentence: The model’s visage earned her many cover photos.
