WHAT IS IFSC?

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an alphanumeric code used to uniquely identify bank branches participating in various electronic funds transfer systems in India. The IFSC code is primarily used for electronic money transfer between banks and financial institutions within India.

Here’s a breakdown of the components of an IFSC code:

1. **First Four Characters**: The first four characters of the IFSC code represent the bank code, which is a unique identifier assigned to each bank by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This part of the code is typically alphabetic.

2. **Fifth Character**: The fifth character of the IFSC code is always a zero (0) and is reserved for future use.

3. **Last Six Characters**: The last six characters of the IFSC code represent the branch code, which uniquely identifies a specific branch of the bank. This part of the code is alphanumeric.

For example, consider the IFSC code “SBIN0001234”:

– “SBIN” represents the bank code, indicating that the bank is State Bank of India.
– “0” is a placeholder for future use.
– “001234” represents the branch code, uniquely identifying a specific branch of State Bank of India.

IFSC codes are used in various electronic payment systems in India, including National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), and Immediate Payment Service (IMPS). When initiating a funds transfer, the sender must provide the recipient’s bank’s IFSC code along with other necessary details to ensure that the funds are routed to the correct branch of the recipient’s bank.
