WHAT IS BORAZON?

Borazon is a synthetic crystal form of cubic boron nitride (cBN), which is an extremely hard material that is second only to diamond in hardness. Borazon was first synthesized in 1957 by General Electric researchers, Robert H. Wentorf Jr. and Donald F. Bovenkerk. Its name is a combination of “boron” and “diamond” due to its similarities in hardness and crystal structure to diamond.

Here are some key points about borazon:

1. **Composition**: Borazon is composed of boron and nitrogen atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure, similar to the carbon atoms in diamond. The arrangement of atoms gives borazon its exceptional hardness and abrasion resistance.

2. **Hardness**: Borazon has a hardness of around 9.5 on the Mohs scale, which is slightly less than diamond but still significantly harder than most other materials. Its hardness makes it ideal for use in cutting tools, grinding wheels, and other applications where extreme wear resistance is required.

3. **Applications**: Borazon is used primarily as an abrasive material in grinding and machining operations. It is particularly well-suited for grinding hard and difficult-to-machine materials such as hardened steels, high-speed steels, and superalloys. Borazon grinding wheels are commonly used in precision grinding applications in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and tool manufacturing.

4. **Advantages**: Compared to diamond, borazon has several advantages in certain applications. It has a higher thermal stability, making it less susceptible to thermal damage during grinding operations. It also has a higher chemical stability, which allows it to be used in grinding applications involving ferrous metals and other materials that can react with diamond.

5. **Manufacturing**: Borazon is typically synthesized under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions using a process known as high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) synthesis. The resulting crystals are then processed into various shapes and sizes for use in grinding tools and other applications.

Overall, borazon is a valuable material in the field of machining and manufacturing, offering exceptional hardness and wear resistance for precision grinding operations. Its unique properties make it an indispensable tool for achieving high levels of accuracy and surface finish in a wide range of industrial applications.
