WHAT IS A SPACE STATION?

A space station is a large spacecraft that orbits Earth and serves as a habitable environment for astronauts to live and work in space for extended periods. Space stations are equipped with living quarters, laboratories, workspaces, communication systems, and life support systems to support human occupants and scientific research activities in the microgravity environment of space.

The most well-known space station is the International Space Station (ISS), which is a collaborative project involving multiple space agencies, including NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), ESA (European Space Agency), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), and CSA (Canadian Space Agency). The ISS serves as a platform for scientific research, technology development, and international cooperation in space exploration.

Other examples of space stations include the former Soviet Union’s Mir space station, China’s Tiangong space stations, and proposed future space station projects by various countries and commercial entities. Space stations play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of space, conducting experiments in microgravity, testing new technologies, and preparing for future human missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
