WHAT ARE SHOOTING STARS?

Shooting stars, also known as meteors, are bright streaks of light that appear in the night sky when small particles of dust or rock, called meteoroids, enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up due to friction with the air. The glowing trail left behind by a meteoroid as it burns up is called a meteor.

Key characteristics of shooting stars include:

1. Appearance: Shooting stars appear as bright streaks of light moving rapidly across the sky. They can vary in brightness, with some appearing as faint streaks and others as bright fireballs that light up the sky.

2. Speed: Shooting stars travel at high speeds through Earth’s atmosphere, typically ranging from 11 to 72 kilometers per second (25,000 to 160,000 miles per hour). The high speed, combined with the friction generated by the atmosphere, causes the meteoroid to heat up and glow brightly.

3. Duration: Most shooting stars only last for a few seconds as they streak across the sky. However, some larger or slower-moving meteors may last longer and leave behind more visible trails.

4. Cause: Shooting stars are caused by meteoroids, which are small particles of dust or rock that originate from comets, asteroids, or other celestial bodies. When a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere, it encounters resistance from the air, causing it to heat up and glow. The intense heat causes the meteoroid to vaporize and disintegrate, producing the bright streak of light we see as a shooting star.

5. Meteor Showers: Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through a stream of debris left behind by a comet or asteroid. During a meteor shower, the number of shooting stars visible in the sky increases, creating a spectacular display of celestial fireworks. Meteor showers are named after the constellation from which they appear to originate, such as the Perseids, Leonids, or Geminids.

Shooting stars are a common and captivating phenomenon that has fascinated people for centuries. They provide an opportunity for stargazers and astronomers to observe the dynamic and ever-changing nature of Earth’s atmosphere and its interaction with objects in space.
