Diesel Electric Loco Production Units
- There are two locomotive manufacturing units in India – DLW (Diesel Locomotive Works), Varanasi, and Chitranjan Locomotive Works, Asansol. DLW, Varanasi is engaged in producing Diesel-Electric locomotives. CLW, Asansol manufactures electric locomotives and is one of the largest locomotive manufacturers in the world. CLW was founded in 1950 and it is named after renowned freedom fighter Chitranjan Das. Apart from these two production units, there is one facility in Patiala Diesel Loco Modernisation Works, Patiala which is engaged in the production and supply of sub-assemblies and spare parts of locomotives.
Railway Coaches Production Units
- The coaches of Indian Railways are manufactured at i) Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, ii) Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Modern Coach Factory, and Raebareli. As of March 2012, the total population of passenger coaches in India was 46,722.
Wheel Production Unit
- Besides locomotive and coach factories there is a factory that manufactures wheels – Rail Wheel Factory, Bangalore. Indian Railway also has Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) located at Lucknow equipped for all design and standardization works.
