Empathy vs Sympathy

 

Empathy Sympathy
The word Empathy is used when you understand and feel the feelings of others. The word Sympathy is used to just feel pity or sorry for the other misfortune or condition, but you don’t necessarily feel his/her feelings.
It is used between the same level of people having similar social and economical status. It is used towards the people of lower social and economical status.
It is also used to express our feeling when we face the same or similar situation. It is used to show pity, sorrow or mercy for someone else misfortune.
For example: I obviously empathy for poors because once I was very poor. For example: I would like to extend my sympathy with you. I am sorry to hear of the death of your doggy.

Empathy vs Sympathy

These both words are slightly similar in meaning but they are not the same.

Empathy

Empathy specifies the ability to understand and share the feeling of others. This word is used to express our feeling when we have shared the same or a similar experience. This feeling is existed between the same level of people having similar economical and social status.

For example:

You obviously have empathy for a poor person if you are, or were poor.

Empathy is a noun. If you want to use the same word as a verb then it should be “to empathize”.

Empathy as a noun:

Let’s take some examples to see how to use “empathy” as a noun.

  • The power of empathy is the great gift for human being.
  • I have empathy for your problem. I am always with you.

Empathy as a verb: empathize

  • I can empathize with you. I have been there.
  • Her ability to empathize with people made him an excellent marriage counselor.

Sympathy

Sympathy specifies the feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else’s misfortune.

For example:

  • I would like to extend my sympathy with you. I am sorry to hear of the death of your doggy.
