National Update

• As the globe is observing World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, the country’s iconic India Gate has been illuminated in vibrant hues of purple and orange. This symbolic act is part of a global movement to light up iconic landmarks across the world to raise awareness about Neglected Tropical Diseases.
• The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported death of 474 homeless persons within a span of 56 days during this winter season in Delhi.
• The Budget session of Parliament will begin today. The session will begin with the address of President Droupadi Murmu to a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament.
• An all-party meeting convened ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament was held at the Parliament House complex yesterday. During the meeting, the government sought cooperation from all political parties to ensure the smooth functioning of the Parliament session.
• A two-day national-level meeting of Labour Ministers and Secretaries of States and Union Territories concluded in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Labour and Employment Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya
• The New Delhi World Book Fair 2025 will commence on 1st February at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This year, the fair’s theme is ‘We the People of India’, commemorating 75 years of the Republic of India.

International Updates

• Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, BHBCUC has reported that 174 attacks on religious minorities occurred across Bangladesh over the last four and a half months, resulting in 23 deaths.
• Pakistan government has decided to criminalise begging following multiple complaints from foreign countries as thousands of its nationals residing abroad have been caught in illegal activities and begging.
• In the US, at least 28 bodies have been recovered from the freezing-cold Potomac River in Washington DC following a mid-air collision between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk helicopter.
• Eight more hostages including three Israeli and five Thai nationals were released from captivity in Gaza in the third round of hostage-prisoner swap under a ceasefire agreement between Palestinian groups and Israel aimed at de-escalating the conflict in the region.
• Authorities in southeast Australia have ordered communities to evacuate as bushfires in western Melbourne, the capital city of Australia’s state of Victoria, continue to spread.
• Sri Lanka’s Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring and continuing a steady supply of quality medicines while enforcing strict regulations.
• In Sri Lanka, Local Government elections will be held in April. Cabinet spokesman Dr Nalinda Jayatissa told reporters that the dates for the polls will be announced soon.

• In Badminton, the World Championships medalist Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s singles event at the ongoing Thailand Masters badminton tournament in Bangkok, Thailand.
