National Updates

  • National Test Agency, NTA has postponed the UGC NET December 2024 exam which was scheduled on Wednesday. In a statement, NTA said, it has received representations to postpone the UGC NET examination on account of Pongal, Makar Sankranti and other festivals on 15th January.
  • The Bangladesh Acting High Commissioner to India, Md. Nural Islam was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. During the meeting, it was conveyed that with regard to security measures at the border, including fencing, India observed all protocols and agreements.
  • Over one crore fifty lakh devotees and pilgrims today took the holy dip as the world’s largest spiritual and cultural gathering of Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the government has procured more than 13 lakh 68 thousand quintals of Soyabean at Minimum Support Price so far.
  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has rejected the claims of META Company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg that most incumbent governments including India in the 2024 elections lost post-COVID.
  • India’s Minister of Minority Affairs, Kiran Rijiju, signed the Haj Agreement 2025 with Saudi Arabia’s Minister for Hajj and Umrah, Dr Tawfiq Bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, in Jeddah.The agreement secures a quota of 175,025 pilgrims from India for the upcoming Haj season.        

International Updates

  • The outgoing Biden administration has imposed new restrictions on exporting US-developed AI chips, aiming to curb China’s military and industrial rise and blocking access to powerful AI chips and “closed” AI models.
  • In the USA, number of people killed in the California wildfires has risen to 24 while the losses due to the wildfires estimated to be in the billions of dollars.
  • In Sri Lanka, 13 reservoirs have started spilling due to high rainfall in the catchment areas in the northern part of the island.
  • In Angola, the Ministry of Health has confirmed 18 deaths and 224 cholera cases. In the past 24 hours, three more deaths and 54 new cases have been reported, primarily in the capital province of Luanda.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed exchanging two captured North Korean soldiers for Ukrainian prisoners held in Russia.
  • South Korea has extended the closure of Muan International Airport till Sunday. The airport was closed following the crash of a Jeju Air passenger jet last month. The Transport Ministry said the extended shutdown is essential for the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.
  • Prime Minister Ilza Amado Vaz of São Tomé and Príncipe has resigned after her proposed cabinet list was made public before being presented to President Carlos Vila Nova.

  • In Domestic Cricket, Mumbai’s Ira Jadhav has become the highest individual scorer in Women’s Under 19 One Day Trophy history. In the Women’s Under-19 One Day Trophy, Ira scored an unbeaten 346 runs off 157 balls, including 42 fours and 16 sixes against Meghalaya.
  • In the Spanish Super Cup Football final, Barcelona convincingly defeated Real Madrid 5-2 in Saudi Arabia.
  • Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain of Punjab Kings for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
  • In Domestic Cricket, Haryana, Karnataka, Vidarbha and Maharashtra have made it to the semi-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25.
