Constitutional Bodies of India


1. Election Commission of India

  • Article: 324
  • Purpose: It is responsible for conducting free and fair elections in India, including elections for Parliament, State Legislatures, and the offices of President and Vice-President.
  • Structure: Consists of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners as appointed by the President.

2. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

  • Articles: 315-323
  • Purpose: Responsible for recruiting candidates for All India Services (like IAS, IPS) and Central Services through competitive exams like the Civil Services Examination.
  • Structure: A Chairman and other members, appointed by the President of India.

3. State Public Service Commission (SPSC)

  • Articles: 315-323
  • Purpose: Recruits candidates for State-level services and posts.
  • Structure: Each state has its own commission, led by a Chairman and members appointed by the Governor of the state.

4. Finance Commission

  • Article: 280
  • Purpose: It advises the President on the distribution of tax revenues between the Union and the States and among the States themselves.
  • Structure: A Chairman and four other members appointed by the President.

5. Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG)

  • Articles: 148-151
  • Purpose: Ensures transparency in public finances by auditing accounts of the Union and State governments and other public authorities.
  • Tenure: Appointed by the President and holds office for six years or until the age of 65.

6. Attorney General of India

  • Article: 76
  • Purpose: Acts as the chief legal advisor to the Government of India and represents the Union in legal matters.
  • Appointment: Appointed by the President and serves at the pleasure of the President.

7. Advocate General of the State

  • Article: 165
  • Purpose: Functions as the chief legal advisor to the State Government, similar to the Attorney General at the state level.
  • Appointment: Appointed by the Governor of the State.

8. National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC)

  • Article: 338
  • Purpose: Safeguards the interests and rights of Scheduled Castes. It advises on the implementation of safeguards for SCs under the Constitution and laws.
  • Structure: A Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and members appointed by the President.

9. National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST)

  • Article: 338A
  • Purpose: Protects the interests and rights of Scheduled Tribes, similar to the NCSC for Scheduled Castes.
  • Structure: A Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and members appointed by the President.

10. National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC)

  • Article: 338B
  • Purpose: Examines issues relating to the socially and educationally backward classes and advises the government on their welfare and development.
  • Structure: A Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and members appointed by the President.

11. Special Officer for Linguistic Minorities

  • Article: 350B
  • Purpose: Ensures the rights of linguistic minorities and safeguards their interests as guaranteed under the Constitution.
  • Appointment: Appointed by the President.

12. Inter-State Council

  • Article: 263
  • Purpose: Promotes coordination and cooperation between the Union and the States and among the States themselves.
  • Structure: Chaired by the Prime Minister, with Chief Ministers of all States and Union Territories as members.

13. Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council

  • Article: 279A
  • Purpose: A federal body that makes recommendations to the Union and States on issues related to the implementation of GST.
  • Structure: Chaired by the Union Finance Minister, with State Finance Ministers as members.
