GURPURAB AND BAISHAKHI

Gurpurb, also spelled Gurpurab, is a Sikh term referring to the celebration of the birth anniversary or martyrdom of one of the Sikh Gurus, the spiritual leaders of Sikhism. The term “Gurpurb” literally means “Guru’s day” or “Guru’s remembrance.” Gurpurabs are observed with great reverence and devotion by Sikhs around the world.

The most significant Gurpurb is the celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birthday, known as Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His birthday usually falls in October or November according to the Gregorian calendar and is celebrated with special prayers, hymn singing (kirtan), processions, and langar (community meals) at gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship). The festivities may also include Nagar Kirtan, which is a Sikh religious procession involving the singing of hymns and the displaying of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture.

Baishakhi also spelled Baisakhi, is a Sikh and Hindu festival celebrated in the Punjab region of South Asia, marking the Sikh New Year and the spring harvest festival. For Sikhs, Baisakhi holds special significance as it also commemorates the formation of the Khalsa, the Sikh community of initiated Sikhs, by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, in 1699.

Baisakhi falls on April 13 or 14 each year according to the Gregorian calendar and is celebrated with various cultural and religious activities. Sikhs typically visit gurdwaras to offer prayers, listen to kirtan, and partake in langar. Nagar Kirtan processions are also held in some places. For Hindus, Baisakhi is celebrated as the harvest festival and is known by different names in different regions, such as Vishu in Kerala and Pohela Boishakh in Bengal.
