WORLD TUNA DAY

World Tuna Day is observed on May 2nd each year to raise awareness about the importance of tuna fish and to promote sustainable fisheries management practices. Tuna is a highly popular and commercially valuable fish species that supports livelihoods, food security, and economies around the world, particularly in coastal regions and island nations.

The observance of World Tuna Day highlights the significance of tuna fisheries in global food systems, as well as the need to address challenges such as overfishing, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, bycatch, habitat destruction, and the impacts of climate change on tuna populations and marine ecosystems.

Efforts to promote sustainable tuna fisheries management and conservation are emphasized on World Tuna Day. This includes initiatives to implement science-based fisheries management measures, reduce bycatch of non-target species, protect critical habitats, combat IUU fishing through improved monitoring and enforcement, and promote responsible consumer choices.

Various organizations, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and the fishing industry, often participate in events and activities to mark World Tuna Day. These may include educational programs, workshops, conferences, policy discussions, and media campaigns aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing action to ensure the long-term sustainability of tuna fisheries for future generations.
