WHAT IS THE SUN MADE OF?

The Sun is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, with smaller amounts of other elements. Here’s a breakdown of its composition:

1. Hydrogen: Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the Sun, accounting for about 74% of its mass and approximately 92% of its atoms. In the Sun’s core, hydrogen undergoes nuclear fusion reactions to form helium, releasing vast amounts of energy in the process.

2. Helium: Helium is the second most abundant element in the Sun, making up about 24% of its mass. Helium is formed through nuclear fusion reactions in the Sun’s core, where hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium nuclei, releasing energy in the form of light and heat.

3. Other Elements: In addition to hydrogen and helium, the Sun contains trace amounts of other elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon, iron, and others. These heavier elements make up less than 2% of the Sun’s mass but are crucial for understanding its internal structure, energy production, and evolution.

The Sun’s composition is similar to that of other stars in the universe, with hydrogen and helium being the most abundant elements by far. The nuclear fusion reactions taking place in the Sun’s core continuously convert hydrogen into helium, releasing energy in the form of sunlight and heat. This energy is what powers the Sun and sustains life on Earth.
