WHAT IS THE DEPTH OF PACIFIC OCEAN?

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean on Earth, covering an area of approximately 63 million square miles (165 million square kilometers). Its average depth is around 12,080 feet (3,682 meters). However, the Pacific Ocean also contains the Mariana Trench, which is the deepest known part of the Earth’s oceans.

The Mariana Trench is located in the western Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islands. It reaches a maximum known depth of approximately 36,070 feet (10,994 meters) at a point known as the Challenger Deep. This depth was measured during the 2010 Deepsea Challenge expedition led by filmmaker James Cameron.

The depth of the Pacific Ocean can vary considerably depending on the location, with some areas being much shallower, such as continental shelves and seamounts, while others are much deeper, such as oceanic trenches. Overall, the Pacific Ocean’s immense size and depth make it a critical component of the Earth’s oceans and a vital part of the planet’s hydrological cycle and biodiversity.
