What Are Carbon Nanotubes?

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are tiny, tube-shaped structures made entirely of carbon atoms. They are extremely small—about 50,000 times thinner than a human hair—but are amazingly strong, lightweight, and conductive. Because of their special properties, they are considered one of the most exciting discoveries in modern science and are widely used in nanotechnology.

Who Discovered Them?

Carbon nanotubes were discovered in 1991 by Dr. Sumio Iijima, a Japanese physicist. While studying carbon particles under a microscope, he found these long, hollow tubes made of carbon atoms. This discovery opened a new era in materials science and nanotechnology.

Structure of Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes are made of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal (honeycomb) pattern, similar to graphene, but rolled into a cylinder.

There are two main types of carbon nanotubes:

  1. Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs):

    • Made of one layer of graphene rolled into a tube.

    • Very thin and flexible.

  2. Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs):

    • Made of several tubes nested inside one another.

    • Stronger and thicker than single-walled tubes.

Why Are They Special? — Key Properties

Carbon nanotubes have unique properties that make them far more useful than ordinary materials:

  • Conduct Electricity: They can carry electric current better than copper wires.

  • 🔍 Nano-Size: Their small size lets them work inside cells, machines, or even fabrics.

Applications of Carbon Nanotubes

Thanks to their amazing properties, carbon nanotubes are used in many fields:

1. Electronics

  • Used in making tiny transistors and wires for faster and smaller computers.

  • Used in touchscreens, sensors, and flexible displays.

2. Medicine

  • Help in delivering drugs directly to cancer cells.

  • Used to create biosensors that detect diseases early.

  • Research is being done on using them to repair tissues or bones.

3. Energy

  • Improve solar panels to absorb more sunlight.

  • Used in batteries and supercapacitors to store more energy.

  • Used to create lightweight windmill blades and fuel cells.

4. Materials Science

  • Added to plastics, metals, and fabrics to make them stronger and lighter.

  • Used in sports equipment (like tennis rackets and bicycle frames).

  • Used in bulletproof vests and aerospace materials.
