The Rapa Nui civilization, also known as the Easter Island civilization, was an ancient Polynesian society that thrived on Easter Island, a remote island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. By the time European explorers arrived on Easter Island in the 18th century, the Rapa Nui civilization had undergone significant changes, with many of the moai toppled and societal structures altered. The arrival of Europeans also brought diseases and further disruptions to Rapa Nui society.
Today, Easter Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the moai continue to be a symbol of the island’s unique cultural heritage and the ingenuity of the Rapa Nui civilization. Efforts are underway to preserve and protect the archaeological sites and cultural traditions of Easter Island for future generations.
