Thanksgiving Words

The holiday celebrates the first Thanksgiving held by the group of settlers known as Pilgrims, who came from Europe and arrived in North America in 1620. The Pilgrims had a difficult first year (partially due to an especially harsh winter). They gave thanks in the Fall of 1621, famously feasting with local Native Americans.

There are numerous traditions that are celebrated on Thanksgiving. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is broadcast from New York City. The parade includes marching bands, performers from Broadway theater productions, celebrities, and very large balloons. The parade draws huge crowds in New York and many people across the country watch the parade on television each year.

American football is also associated with Thanksgiving. Local rivalries often face off and the National Football League (NFL) broadcasts games over television. Some families play their own football games in their yard before or after their big meal.

Many businesses also close on the Friday following Thanksgiving. This day is often referred to as “Black Friday,” and retail stores open early (sometimes as early as Thursday afternoon) to give shoppers a chance at items on sale. This is the traditional “beginning” of Christmas shopping.
