States and Union Territories

States and Union Territories

As of 2025, India has 28 states and 8 union territories. Each state has its own government and capital. Union territories are governed directly by the Central Government, and some also have their own legislative assemblies.

This clear division helps manage the vast country better and is important in understanding the states of India list used in school lessons and competitive exams.

Difference Between State and Union Territory

  • state has its own government, chief minister, and legislative assembly.
  • union territory is directly governed by the President through an administrator or Lieutenant Governor.

Some union territories like Delhi and Puducherry have partial state-like powers, but not full autonomy. Knowing this helps clarify the structure of union territories of India.
