Milkha Singh was a famous sprinter of India who is known as Flying Sikh। He first competed in the 200 metres and 400 metres races at the 1956 Olympic Games held in Melbourne। Milkha Singh set records in the 200 metres and 400 metres events at the 1958 National Games held in Cuttack। After this, in the Asian Games held in Tokyo in the same year, he also won the gold medal in the 200 meter and 400 meter races। In the year 1958 itself, Milkha Singh once again proved his talent and won the gold medal in the 400 meter race in the Commonwealth Games held in Cardiff, England। At that time, he was the first Indian to win a gold medal for India in the Commonwealth Games in independent India।

मिलखा सिंह भारत के ऐसे प्रसिद्ध धावक थे जिन्हें लोग फ्लाइंग सिक्ख के नाम से जानते हैं। सन 1956 में मेलबर्न में आयोजित हुए ओलंपिक खेलों में उन्होंने पहली बार 200 मीटर और 400 मीटर की रेस में भाग लिया था। मिलखा सिंह ने 1958 में कटक में आयोजित नेशनल गेम्स में 200 मीटर और 400 मीटर स्पर्धा में रिकॉर्ड बनाए। इसके बाद उसी साल टोक्यो में आयोजित हुए एशियन गेम्स में उन्होंने 200 मीटर और 400 मीटर की दौड़ में भी गोल्ड मेडल अपने नाम किया। साल 1958 में ही इंग्लैंड के कार्डिफ में आयोजित कॉमनवेल्थ गेम्स में मिलखा सिंह ने एक बार फिर अपनी प्रतिभा का लोहा मनवाते हुए 400 मीटर की रेस में गोल्ड मेडल अपने नाम किया। उस समय आज़ाद भारत में कॉमनवेल्थ गेम्स में भारत को स्वर्ण पदक दिलाने वाले वे पहले भारतीय थे।
परिचय: मिलखा सिंह का जन्म 20 नवम्बर, 1929 गोविंदपुरा (जो अब पाकिस्तान का हिस्सा हैं) में एक सिक्ख परिवार में हुआ था। उनका बचपन बेहद कठिन दौर से गुजरा। भारत के विभाजन के बाद हुए दंगों में मिलखा सिंह ने अपने माता-पिता और कई भाई-बहन को खो दिया। उनके अंदर दौड़ने को लेकर एक जुनून बचपन से ही था। वह अपने घर से स्कूल और स्कूल से घर की 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी दौड़ कर पूरी करते थे। 9वीं पास करने के बाद वे मेकैनिकल व्यवसाय में संलग्न हो गए। 1953 में वे सेना में भर्ती हो गये। सेना में रहकर उन्होंने दौड़-कूद की और विशेष ध्यान दिया और 400 मीटर की दौड़ की तैयारियाँ प्रारम्भ कर दीं।
