How can I Help my Teen Overcome Stress?

Adolescence can be a very difficult time for both teens and their parents alike. The physical, emotional, and social changes that adolescents go through can be very confusing and daunting. At this time, they require parents who understand what they are going through and support them in the best possible manner. The best thing you can do as a parent to help your teen overcome stress is to be cued into her, that is, to be able to sense what may be going on inside her. Try to be aware of what is happening in your teen’s life without being intrusive and controlling, and give her the space to figure out who she is as a person.

Here are a Few Tips:

1. Have open ongoing conversations with your teen on a daily basis—even if your teen tells you something you don’t approve of, fight off the urge to jump in with your judgments and dislikes. Try to hear her out with patience and help her figure out her own path.

2. Teens are often stressed by several things – friendships, relationships, studies, parents, choices, etc. It is alright to have stress, in fact, it is very much part of our daily lives. But when stress makes your teen tense, and reduces focus and concentration then it’s time to support her.

3. Show her how to solve a problem. Together, you could brainstorm possible solutions. But whatever solution she chooses, helps her own it by discussing the possible consequences. If you do this consistently, rest assured that you will have a strong bond with your teen and she won’t think twice before sharing any part of her life with you.

4. Help her balance her life (academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, hobbies, time with friends and family). Encourage her to draft a weekly timetable for herself, prioritize what’s important to her, and manage her time better.

Also emphasize to your teen the importance of getting adequate sleep, regular physical exercise, and a nutritious diet. These go a long way in keeping her mind and body healthy and stress-free.
