EID-AL-ADHA

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant festivals in Islam. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Isma’il (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to God’s command.

Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, following the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. The festival lasts for four days, with the main day of celebration occurring on the 10th day itself.

The central ritual of Eid al-Adha is the sacrifice of an animal, usually a sheep, goat, cow, or camel, as a symbolic act of devotion and obedience to God. The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one-third is given to the poor and needy, one-third is distributed among relatives and friends, and one-third is kept for the household.

Before the sacrifice, Muslims perform the Eid prayer, which is offered in congregation at mosques or open prayer grounds. The Eid prayer consists of two rakats (units of prayer) and is accompanied by a sermon (khutbah) delivered by the imam.

Following the prayer, Muslims exchange greetings of “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) and partake in the festive atmosphere with family and friends. They dress in their finest attire, visit relatives and neighbors, and share meals and sweets together.

Eid al-Adha is also a time for reflection on the importance of sacrifice, obedience, and faith. Muslims remember the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his son Isma’il and draw inspiration from their willingness to submit to God’s will.

Overall, Eid al-Adha is a time of joy, gratitude, and generosity, as Muslims come together to celebrate the spirit of sacrifice and unity. It is a reminder of the values of compassion, charity, and devotion that are central to the Islamic faith.
