Our daily lives are filled with measurements, Different units are used by human beings to measure the shape of an object like meters, centimeters, inches, feet, etc. It depends on the size or shape of the object to find the appropriate unit of measurement. Let’s consider an example: cm is the appropriate unit of measurement for measuring the height of a pencil, whereas in order to measure the height of a chair, the foot is the appropriate unit of measurement.

 

Measurement is divided into two sets: the Metric system and the imperial system. Meters, centimeters, etc. are included in the metric system and the imperial system includes feet, inches, yards, etc.

What do we mean by Foot?

A foot is a unit to measure the length or distance in the US. “Foot” refers to a single unit of measurement whereas “feet” is its plural alternative. Ft is the abbreviation used for foot or feet and the symbol that we use is ‘. For example, a bag that is one foot long can be written as 1 ft or 1’.

The difference between feet and foot actually lies in their number. Feet is the plural form of the foot. However, feet and foot also have two distinct meanings. Foot and feet are the lower part of the leg as well as the measurement of height, length, and distance. As we have mentioned above, the Foot is also used to refer to the lower part of the leg.

Let’s consider some examples to understand this:

• The wound in her foot is infected.
• There is a birthmark on her right foot.

Although the foot is a singular form, you would have probably noticed that it is often used with measurements. You might have heard people saying their height is ‘five foot’ and ‘six foot’. This standard can be usually observed in conversations. This singular measurement is also used with numbers when the measurement acts as an adjective. For example, six-foot girl, ten-foot pole, five-foot door, etc. Therefore, the usage of foot in the following example cannot be deemed incorrect:

• I’m five foot tall.
• It was a six-foot wall.
• He saw a fifty-foot wave.
• The seven-foot man was a giant.

It is to be noted that when we use this measurement as a modifier, the number and the unit is often separated by a dash.

What do we mean by Feet?

We have already discussed above that it is the plural form of foot. You can use this word if you are referring to the lower parts of both your legs. For example,

• He dipped his feet in the ice-cold water.
• I’ve been on my feet all day.

Feet is also used to refer measurement of height, length and depth. For example,

• The well is fifty feet deep.
• I jumped seven feet over a wall.
• The dwarf was only two feet tall.
• The plane climbed to a height of 20,000 feet.
• We were standing a few feet apart.

But when the measurement is used as an adjective (six-foot pole, Ten-foot tree, etc.) the singular measurement foot is used instead of feet.

He was a ten-foot giant. – The giant was ten feet tall.

He climbed a twenty-foot tree. – The tree he climbed is twenty feet in height.

Difference between feet and foot

Foot can either refer to:

• The lower part of the leg.
• Measurement of height, length, and depth.

As we have discussed earlier Feet is the plural form of foot.

Feet is the plural form of the foot.

The foot is the singular form of feet.

Measurement:

Plural measurements generally involve the use of feet.

The foot can also be used with plural measurement, especially in spoken language and when the measurement acts as an adjective.

Modifier:

Feet are not used with plural measurements when the measurement acts as a modifier.

The foot is used with plural measurements when the measurement acts as a modifier.

How is a foot related to an inch?

The value of 1 feet equals 12 inches. Or we can also rewrite the equation as 1 inch = 1 / 12 feet.

Let’s consider an example: if a toy is 24 inches in height, it’s height in ft will be = 24 / 12 = 2 feet.

Inches to feet and feet to inches

Sometimes, while converting measurements from inches to feet, we get the quotient in decimals. Instead of converting the quantity in decimals, we prefer to find the value in feet and inches.

Let’s take an example:

70 inches = 5 feet and 10 inches because when we divide 70 by 12, we get 5 as the quotient and 10 as the remainder. The remainder value in the division will be written as it is in inches.

Let’s take one more example:

50 inches to feet = (50 / 12) ft = 4 feet and 2 inches.

How is yard related to feet?

The value of one yard equals 3 feet. By rewriting the equation, we can say, 1 foot = 1 / 3 yard.

Let’s consider an example:

A park is 9 yards in length and we have to fence the length in feet. In order to get the length in feet, we will multiply 9 by 3 so, we will get 27 ft.

How are feet related to meters?

The value of 1 meter equals 3.28 feet. By rewriting the equation, we can say, 1 foot = 0.3048 meters.

Let’s consider an example:

The height of the wall is three meters. The approximate height of the wall in feet = 3 * 3.28 – 9.84 feet.

How are feet related to centimeters?

The value of 1 centimeter equals 0.0328 feet. By rewriting the equation, we can say, 1 foot = 30.48 cm.

Let’s consider an example:

The height of a door is 7 feet. So, the approximate height of the door in cm will be 7 × 30.48 = 213.36 cm.
