National Updates

• In Prayagraj, more than seven crore devotees have taken holy dip in Sangam so far on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
• A grand Beating Retreat ceremony was held at the historic Vijay Chowk in New Delhi last evening, marking the culmination of 76th Republic Day celebrations. Synchronised performances by the Armed and Central Police Forces bands mesmerized the crowd with their melodious tunes.
• Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered judicial inquiry over the incident that occurred at Sangam Ghat in Mahakumbh, Prayagraj.
• Uttar Pradesh’s tableau based on the theme ‘Mahakumbh 2025 – Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas’, has won the best tableau award at the Republic Day Parade held on 26th January at Kartavya Path in New Delhi.
• The government has approved the National Critical Mineral Mission with an outlay of more than 34 thousand crore rupees. The decision has been taken to build a resilient value chain for critical mineral resources essential for promoting green technologies.
• The Indian Railways has denied rumours circulating on social media that certain special trains for Mahakumbh have been cancelled.
• The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched its new generation satellite NVS-02 from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh yesterday. Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F15) carrying the NVS-02 lifted off at 6:23 AM.

International Updates

• A small aircraft carrying oil workers in South Sudan’s Unity State crashed killing 20 people. An official said, the plane crashed at the Unity oilfield airport this morning as it was heading to the capital Juba.
• In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League Party has announced a series of protest programmes in February, including Blockade and a nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal on 18 February.
• In Nepal, several programs were organised nationwide, offering tributes to those who laid down their lives on Martyrs Day .
• US President Donald Trump has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a meeting in the White House next week. Mr Netanyahu said in a social media post, that he will be meeting the US President on the 4th of next month
• Sri Lanka’s Central Bank expects headline inflation to remain negative in the near term in the crisis-stricken island. In its latest policy review, the Central Bank has said that inflation is expected to gradually rise to the target of 5 per cent by mid-2025.
• In the US, the Trump administration is offering millions of federal workers the chance to accept buyouts through a “deferred resignation” program if they resign by February 6. Those who take the offer will continue to receive pay and benefits until September 30.
• Israel has announced it will sever all ties with the United Nations’ Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA, following the implementation of a ban on the organization’s activities on Israeli territory.

Sports Updates

• The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that Geoff Allardice has decided to step down as ICC Chief Executive. Allardice’s decision comes amid concerns over Pakistan’s readiness to host Champions Trophy 2025, starting next month.
• In the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, World Chess Champion Gukesh Dommaraju emerged as the sole leader in the Masters standings after securing a Round 9 victory in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

• Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been honoured with the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024.
