National Updates

• The Election Commission has announced the schedule for the biennial elections for the eight Rajya Sabha seats including six seats from Tamil Nadu and two seats from Assam. According to the Commission, the notification will be issued on the second of next month.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth 77,400 crore rupees at Bhuj and Dahod in Gujarat.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed eleven years in office. It was on this day in 2014 that Mr Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India. This marked a turning point in the country’s modern political history as it ended the 30-year era of coalition politics in India.

• Union Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh launched the Bharat Forecasting System, BFS, in New Delhi. Developed by the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology , the Bharat Forecasting System will provide forecasts with a 6-kilometer resolution-the highest in the world.

• The National Investigation Agency-NIA has arrested a Central Reserve Police Force-CRPF personnel for sharing sensitive information with Pakistan Intelligence officers-PIOs.

• चुनाव आयोग ने तमिलनाडु की छह सीटों और असम की दो सीटों सहित आठ राज्यसभा सीटों के लिए द्विवार्षिक चुनावों के कार्यक्रम की घोषणा की है। आयोग के अनुसार, अधिसूचना अगले महीने की दूसरी तारीख को जारी की जाएगी।
• प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने गुजरात के भुज और दाहोद में ७७,४०० करोड़ रुपये की कई विकास परियोजनाओं का उद्घाटन और आधारशिला रखी।

• Pakistan’s Lahore High Court directed authorities of Punjab province to take immediate steps to curb the fast-spreading beggar mafia, including through the development of a mobile application. The court also criticised the provincial government for failing to apply enacted laws.

• In Romania, Nicusor Dan assumed office as President. The 55-year-old independent candidate secured 53.6 per cent of the votes in the presidential runoff on 18th of this month, defeating George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians.

• The Kremlin has reacted to US President Donald Trump’s remarks about Russian President Vladimir Putin being crazy for launching the largest aerial attack on Ukraine. Kremlin attributed Trump’s criticism to the emotional overload of everyone.

• Israel has rejected a new proposal aimed at halting its offensive in Gaza and securing the release of 10 more hostages. A senior Israeli official from the country’s negotiation team told Israel’s state-owned TV today that US mediators presented the proposal overnight.

• Sri Lanka today bids farewell to legendary actress Malani Fonseka with full state honours at Independence Square in the Capital Colombo. Dubbed the “Queen of Sri Lankan Cinema,” Ms. Fonseka passed away on Friday at the age of 78 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Sri Lanka.

• US President Donald Trump has agreed to extend the deadline to negotiate tariffs with the European Union until July 9. This development follows European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s remark that she had a call with the US President.

• Indian boxer Pawan Bartwal advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s 55kg category at the 4th Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament with a dominant 5-0 win over Cambodia’s Sao Rangsey.
