National Updates

  • The 100-day TB elimination campaign of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has detected over five lakh tuberculosis (TB) patients across the country. In 455 districts involved in the campaign, over three lakh 57 thousand TB patients have been diagnosed.
  • Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His selection was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. Mr. Das is a former 1980-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 19th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme on Monday from Bhagalpur, Bihar. The scheme provides six thousand rupees annually to landholding farmers in three equal instalments.
  • The Centre has facilitated 1.56 crore rupees in refunds to students from coaching centres, providing relief to aspirants and students. The Department of Consumer Affairs successfully facilitated these refunds for over 600 students.
  • Over 1,500 nominations were received for the Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration, 2024. The awards aim to recognise the contribution of civil servants under three categories.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a three-day visit to Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam from today. He will lay the foundation stone of Bageshwar Dham Medical and Science Research Institute in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the Guest of Honour at Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebration next month.

 

International Updates

  • A second meeting between representatives of Russia and the United States is planned within the next two weeks. The Russian RIA state news agency reported, citing Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, that the meeting will take place in a third country, with the specific location still being dsclosed.
  • A group of 22 fishermen released by Pakistan from Karachi’s Malir Jail are expected to be handed over to India by this morning. The fishermen were freed from the jail after the completion of their sentences.
  • The Palestinian group Hamas has released six Israeli hostages as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal. The first two Israeli hostages were released in Rafah, while three others were released in Nuseirat.
  • South Sudan has ordered all schools to close for two weeks due to an ongoing extreme heat wave that has caused some students to collapse.
  • A New Jersey man, Hadi Matar, has been convicted of attempted murder and assault for the stabbing of renowned British-Indian author Salman Rushdie.
  • US President Donald fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Q Brown, the highest-ranking officer in the country last night.
  • In US, a federal judge has stopped an order from President Donald Trump that aimed to cut government support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

Sports Updates

  • India secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Germany in the women’s FIH Pro League match, with star drag-flicker scoring the decisive goal from a penalty corner in the 12th minute at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
  • The top-seeded Indian duo, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Vijay Sundar Prasanth have clinched the men’s doubles title of the Pune ATP Challenger 100. They defeated the second-seeded Australian pair, Blake Bayldon and Matthew Romios, 3-6, 6-3, 10-0 to be crowned champions in front of the home crowd.
  • In athletics, the Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medallist Gulveer Singh has made history by becoming the first Indian to break the 13-minute barrier in the men’s 5000 metre indoor race.
