National Updates

• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cold wave conditions at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan today.
• Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla held a bilateral meeting with President of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan in the Parliament House Complex. Both sides held discussions on various issues of mutual interest.
• The Lok Sabha has approved the Supplementary Demands for Grants-First Batch for 2024-2025. The government sought approval of Parliament to authorise gross additional expenditure of over 87 thousand 762 crore rupees.
• Science and Technology Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh launched India’s first-of-its-kind anti-pesticide bodysuit, Kisan Kavach in New Delhi
• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting of the Ministry’s Consultative Committee in New Delhi. In the meeting, the roles and functions of the new Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) were discussed.
• The Lok Sabha yesterday took up the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024 for consideration and passing.
• The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change organized the Eco-Creativity and Innovation Hackathon in New Delhi. The hackathon aims to inspire young minds to tackle local environmental issues creatively through technology and innovation.
• The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has begun its 4-weeks long Winter Internship programme, for post-graduate-level students. 80 students from different academic disciplines from various universities and colleges of the country are attending the program

• South Korea’s Army Chief of Staff General Park An-su, who served as the chief commander during President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived imposition of martial law, was arrested
• A top General in Charge of Russian nuclear protection forces Igor Kirillov has been killed along with an aide by a bomb hidden in an electric scooter in Moscow
• In Sri Lanka, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne has been elected as new Speaker of the Parliament. The appointment of the new speaker comes following the resignation of Asoka Ranwala on December 13 in the midst of a controversy over his educational qualifications
• In France’s Mayotte, at least, 22 deaths and more than 1400 injuries have been confirmed so far due to Cyclone Chido
• More than 8.8 lakh people have been displaced since the latest escalation of hostilities in Syria as per the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
• In Bangladesh, the High Court restored the constitutional provision of the non-party caretaker government system for holding parliamentary elections
• Vietnam Coast Guard Ship, CSB 8005 arrived in Kochi, as part of the efforts to enhance international cooperation between India and Vietnam.
