National Updates

• The first phase of the Naval Commanders’ Conference 2026 concluded in New Delhi. Defence Ministry said that the four-day conference served as a key platform for a comprehensive review of the Indian Navy’s operational and materiel preparedness, infrastructure, logistics, and human resource.

• The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill 2026, intended to implement one-third women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and the legislative assembly, failed to get the nod in the Lower House. The Bill fell short of the two-thirds majority of 352, out of the total 528 members.

• The Haj pilgrimage from India for the year 2026 is set to commence today, with the first batch of pilgrims scheduled to depart for Saudi Arabia from various embarkation points across the country. The Ministry of Minority Affairs said that over 1 lakh 75 thousand pilgrims are expected to undertake haj this year.

• The government has undertaken a series of targeted reforms to strengthen the functioning of Norms Committees (NCs) under the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

• The 3rd Session of the India-Norway Dialogue on Trade and Investment (DTI) was held in New Delhi. The Dialogue was co-chaired by, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry Mohit Yadav and Director General, Department of Trade Policy, Ministry of Trade Nina Christine.

• The India-Austria Business Forum was held in New Delhi, during the Austrian Chancellor Dr Christian Stocker’s first visit to India. Led by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the forum provided an opportunity to strengthen trade and investment ties between India and Austria.

• US President Donald Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have announced that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open to commercial shipping. In a social media post, Mr. Araghchi announced that the passage for all commercial vessels through the strait is completely open in line with the ceasefire.

• Bollywood Actress Sayani Gupta has been named as the 2026 Person of the Year by the Harvard South Asian Association in recognition of her outstanding contribution to film, storytelling, and representation. She is scheduled to be formally felicitated at Harvard University later this month.

• Bangladesh’s ongoing loan programme with the International Monetary Fund has hit a major roadblock, with the lender declining to release the next 1.3 billion US dollars tranche due by June, citing failure to implement key economic reforms.

• United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, while commending the role of the United States in facilitating the agreement.

• नौसेना कमांडर’ सम्मेलन 2026 का पहला चरण नई दिल्ली में संपन्न हुआ। रक्षा मंत्रालय ने कहा कि चार दिवसीय सम्मेलन भारतीय नौसेना की परिचालन और सामग्री तैयारियों, बुनियादी ढांचे, रसद और मानव संसाधन की व्यापक समीक्षा के लिए एक प्रमुख मंच के रूप में कार्य करता है।
• संविधान (एक सौ इकतीसवां संशोधन) विधेयक 2026, जिसका उद्देश्य लोकसभा और विधान सभा में एक तिहाई महिलाओं के आरक्षण को लागू करना था, निचले सदन में मंजूरी पाने में विफल रहा। यह विधेयक कुल 528 सदस्यों में से 352 के दो-तिहाई बहुमत से पीछे रह गया।
