National Updates

• The Supreme Court struck down a law which said a woman would be eligible for maternity leave if she legally adopts a child below the age of three months. A Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan held that an adoptive mother should be entitled to maternity leave of 12 weeks.

• Parliament has passed the Appropriation Bill 2026 with the Rajya Sabha returning it to the Lower House after discussion. The Lok Sabha has already given its approval to the Appropriation Bill. The Bill seeks to authorise payment and appropriation of certain further sums from and out of the Consolidated Fund of India.

• Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has announced a temporary waiver of imbalance charges for entities, shippers, and consumers, citing the ongoing geopolitical crisis in the Gulf region.

• Secretary (West) of the External Affairs Ministry, Sibi George, co-chaired the 7th India-Russia UN Consultations with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov in New Delhi.

• Special Secretary at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, stated that all the Indian sailors and ships are safe in the Gulf region. Mr Sinha informed this while addressing the Inter Ministerial Briefing on Recent Developments in West Asia in New Delhi.

• The Government has enhanced the Budget allocation of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare from 21,933 crore during 2013-14 to 127,290 crore during 2025-26. This was stated by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Bhagirath Choudhary, in a written reply.

• The LPG tanker Nanda Devi has successfully arrived at Vadinar Port in Devbhoomi Dwarka district of Gujarat. The vessel, which departed from Qatar and navigated the Strait of Hormuz, is carrying approximately 46,000 metric tons of LPG. The unloading process has begun at the port.

• The conflict across West Asia has sharply intensified in the past few hours, with Israeli military officials claiming a major strike on Iran’s command structure. The Israeli Defense Forces say they have killed Ali Larijani, a secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council.

• The head of the ⁠United States’ National ⁠Counterterrorism Center, Joe Kent, has resigned ‌over the US-Israel war with Iran. In a letter to US President Donald Trump, he wrote that Iran posed no imminent threat to ​the country, and the government started this ​war due to pressure from Israel.

• As violence against civilians intensifies across Balochistan, leading human rights organisations have brought to light the extrajudicial killing of two civilians and the enforced disappearance of others by Pakistani authorities.

• Afganistan has warned a ‘teeth-breaking response’ to the airstrikes carried out by Pakistan in Kabul. Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior spokesperson Abdul Matin Qane has said Afghanistan considers Pakistan’s latest strike as major escalation and emphasized that such actions cannot go unanswered.

• Finnish President Alexander Stubb has suggested that India can play a meaningful diplomatic role in easing tensions between the United States and Iran, calling for an immediate ceasefire as the conflict in West Asia continues to intensify.

• Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is uncertain as the country’s football federation is in talks with FIFA to move its scheduled matches in the United States to Mexico due to rising security concerns.

• In Badminton, the Orleans Masters Super 300 tournament began at the Palais des Sports in France. In Women’s Singles, Aakarshi Kashyap defeated Y. Lee of Chinese Taipei 21-17, 21-19 in a Qualifier match last evening.

• सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने उस कानून को रद्द कर दिया जिसमें कहा गया था कि अगर कोई महिला कानूनी तौर पर तीन महीने से कम उम्र के बच्चे को गोद लेती है तो वह मातृत्व अवकाश के लिए पात्र होगी। न्यायाधीशों की एक पीठ जेबी परदिवाला और आर. महादेवन का मानना था कि दत्तक मां को 12 सप्ताह के मातृत्व अवकाश की हकदार होना चाहिए।
• संसद ने विनियोग विधेयक 2026 पारित कर दिया है तथा राज्यसभा ने चर्चा के बाद इसे निचले सदन में वापस भेज दिया है। लोकसभा पहले ही विनियोग विधेयक को अपनी मंजूरी दे चुकी है। विधेयक भारत के समेकित कोष से और उसके बाहर कुछ अतिरिक्त राशियों के भुगतान और विनियोग को अधिकृत करना चाहता है।
• पेट्रोलियम और प्राकृतिक गैस नियामक बोर्ड ने खाड़ी क्षेत्र में चल रहे भू-राजनीतिक संकट का हवाला देते हुए संस्थाओं, शिपर्स और उपभोक्ताओं के लिए असंतुलन शुल्क में अस्थायी छूट की घोषणा की है।
• विदेश मंत्रालय के सचिव (पश्चिम) सिबी जॉर्ज ने नई दिल्ली में रूसी उप विदेश मंत्री अलेक्जेंडर अलीमोव के साथ 7वें भारत-रूस संयुक्त राष्ट्र परामर्श की सह-अध्यक्षता की।
