National Updates

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Sonamarg Tunnel project in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. This tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg en route to Leh.
  • Mahakumbh 2025 to Set New Healthcare Standard with Medical Facilities & Netra Kumbh Eye Fair
  • India has joined the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics. As part of the committee, India will contribute to shaping global standards and practices in harnessing big data and data science for official statistical purposes.
  • Three thousand six hundred seventy-six applicants from various states have been allotted provisional seats for Haj 2025. The Haj Committee of India released the second waiting list for this year’s Haj.
  • Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has announced India will host the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Parliaments of Commonwealth Countries (CSPOC) in 2026.
  • India is a major defence export centre as it sells domestically manufactured defence components to around 100 countries; major among them are United States, France and Armenia. This was stated by Deputy Director General, Defence Investment and Corridor Cell, department of defence production.
  • Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has launched the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform at the Bharat Climate Forum 2025 in New Delhi.

 

International Updates

  • In Sri Lanka, the government has introduced revised import taxes on vehicles through a special gazette notification, effective February. Excise duties between 200 percent and 300 percent will apply, based on engine cylinder capacities and motor power.
  • In Colombia, at least 10 people have died after a small aircraft crashed in northwestern Colombia.
  • In Pakistan, at least four persons were killed after a methane gas explosion caused a coal mine to collapse in Balochistan province.

  • An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 jolted Afghanistan early this morning. According to the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake hit northern Afghanistan at a depth of 10 kilometres at 5 AM, IST.

  • In tennis, this year’s first Grand Slam, the Australian Open 2025, will officially kick off today in Melbourne. India will be well represented at the 2025 Australian Open. Sumit Nagal will play in the first round against Czechia’s Tomas Machac
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. The series will begin on the 22nd of this month in Kolkata. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side, and Axar Patel has been named as the vice-captain.
  • In the Indian Super League, Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal 1-0, maintaining their unbeaten streak against their archrivals in Guwahati.
  • In the Malaysia Open Badminton, the Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty faced a defeat against the South Korean duo of Seo Seung-Jae and Kim Won-ho 10-21, 15-21 in the semifinal of Men’s doubles in Kuala Lumpur.
  • Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal has announced his retirement from international cricket. The left-handed batter recently met with the national selection panel which was preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy.
