National Updates

  • The government has approved 8,800 crore rupees for the Skill India programme for the period from 2022-23 to 2025-26.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a high-profile diplomatic visit to France and the United States next week. His tour will focus on strengthening strategic, economic, and technological partnerships with both nations.
  • Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the Narcotics Control Bureau of India for a major breakthrough in Mumbai in seizing very high-grade cocaine, ganja, and cannabis gummies and arresting four people.
  • A private member bill, namely the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha for consideration and passing. NCP MP Dr Fauzia Khan moved the bill, which seeks to amend the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
  • The External Affairs Ministry summoned Bangladesh Acting High Commissioner, Mr. Md. Nural Islam, and conveyed that it is regrettable that regular statements made by Bangladesh authorities continue to portray India negatively.
  • India’s foreign exchange reserves increased by 1.05 billion dollars to over 630.6 billion dollars in the week ending January 31, according to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This is the second consecutive week of rise in the reserves.
  • The government said there has been an increase of 6.34 percent in the budgetary allocation for capital acquisition in the modernisation of the defence for the current financial year.

International Updates

  • Nepal and India’s friendship takes one step forward by laying the foundation stone for the construction of the Kuri Health Post-Birthing Centre Building at Khaniyabas Rural Municipality in Dhading.
  • A 2-day-long BIMSTEC digital conclave kicked off in Colombo with the theme Building Digital Public Infrastructure for Shared Prosperity. The event was inaugurated in the presence of the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha and the Secretary General of BIMSTEC, Indra Mani Pandey.
  • The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Friday expressed deep concern over the vandalism and violence at Mujib Memorial Museum, Dhaka and almost in the entire country over the past two days and criticised Dr Yunus administration’s role to prevent it.
  • Israel has said it has begun preparations for the departure of large numbers of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip in line with US President Donald Trump’s plan for the territory. Officials, meanwhile, said Egypt has launched a diplomatic blitz behind the scenes to try and head off the plan.
  • Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has ordered Defence Force Commander Paul Valentino Phiri to begin preparations for the withdrawal of Malawian troops from the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
  • France has officially delivered its first batch of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine. In a social media post, French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed that the first of these aircraft have arrived in Ukraine, though he did not specify the exact number.
  • In Alaska, an aircraft carrying 10 people across Norton Sound, south of the Arctic Circle, went missing at 1:30 AM IST last night. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with rescuers continuing their efforts through the night to locate any signs of the aircraft.
  • The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that England’s men’s team will play their ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 match against Afghanistan on February 26 in Lahore.
  • In Bangladesh, an uncontrolled mob vandalised and set fire to the residence of former president Abdul Hamid in Kishoreganj district.

  • The Ninth Asian Winter Games (AWG) 2025 has begun at Harbin, the capital city of northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. Chinese President Xi Jinping declared the Games open in the presence of visiting dignitaries, including International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.
