National Updates

  • The Government has said that the Sex Ratio at Birth of girl child in the country has improved from 918 in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24. Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur said this in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
  • The Rajya Sabha has passed the Boilers Bill 2024. It repeals the Boilers Act, Specific provisions have been made in the Bill to ensure the safety of persons working inside a boiler and the repair of boilers undertaken by qualified and competent persons.
  • External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar held discussions with his Kuwaiti counterpart Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya in New Delhi yesterday.
  • The Lok Sabha today took up the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024 for consideration and passing. The Bill seeks to grant statutory powers to the Railway Board and enhance the functioning and independence of the body. It repeals the Indian Railway Board Act 1905 and incorporates provisions related to it.
  • Government has said that the National Cooperative Development Corporation, NCDC has sanctioned financial assistance of over seven thousand 708 crore rupees for the development of cooperative societies exclusively promoted by women.
  • The government has said that 60 districts have been freed from the menace of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in the country during the last five years.
  • The government said 5G services are available in 779 districts out of 783 districts in the country.
  • BJP today staged a walkout from the Delhi Assembly, accusing the AAP-led Delhi government of avoiding discussion on financial irregularities, pollution and other matters related to public interest.

 

International Updates

  • In South Korea, the lawmakers of the opposition coalition moved a motion in the Parliament to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after his shocking imposition of martial law that brought thousands of protesters to the streets.
  • Scottish artist Jasleen Kaur has won the prestigious Turner Prize, a major UK contemporary art award, as it celebrated its 40th anniversary. Kaur was recognised for her exhibition Alter-Altar, which features a unique installation of a Ford Escort car decorated with a giant doily.
  • Israel has warned that it would expand its attacks to target Lebanon if the fragile truce with Hezbollah collapses. The warning comes after Hezbollah fired two mortars at a disputed border area on Monday, accusing Israel of violating the truce.
  • UK MPs have raised concern over the ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Bangladesh. An urgent issue was tabled in the House of Commons in the UK’s parliament over the worrisome situation in Bangladesh.
  • In Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) party has won the country’s eighth presidential election, becoming its first female president.
  • South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has announced the lifting of emergency martial law after the National Assembly voted to end it, following fierce backlash from lawmakers across the political spectrum.
  • The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory for Bangladesh, saying terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Bangladesh.

 

Sports Updates

  • In the Under-19 Asia Cup, India qualified for the semi-finals winning the last Group A ODI match against the hosts United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 10 wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. UAE set a target of 138 runs after winning the toss and elected to bat.
  • India’s D Gukesh and China’s Ding Liren played out a draw in the eighth round of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 at the Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing of Indian squash player Raj Manchanda. Mr Modi said that Raj Manchanda was a true legend of Indian squash, known for his dedication and excellence.
