International Updates
- China and Canada moved swiftly to retaliate against newly imposed US tariffs, announcing their levies on American goods that could further disrupt the United States trade with its top three trading partners.
- Israel has set conditions for the next phase of a ceasefire deal in Gaza with Palestinian armed group Hamas. During a media briefing, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said, Tel Aviv has demanded a demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, an end to the rule of Hamas and the return of their hostages.
- In Indonesia, hundreds of people were evacuated after severe flooding hit most areas in Jakarta and surrounding cities due to heavy rain in the region.
- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented a plan to boost Europe’s defence industry and increase military capabilities. Briefing media in Brussels , the EU Chief said, Europe was in an era of rearmament and the region is ready to massively boost its defence spending.
- Nepal’s Parliament passed the Electronic Commerce Bill, giving confidence to consumers and creating a legal framework for regulating the country’s online trade. The bill proposes fines ranging from three lakh Nepali rupees to five lakh Nepali rupees, jail terms of three years, or both, depending on the crime committed.
- Ukraine’s Air Force reported that 99 drones were launched into the country by Russia overnight, causing significant damage and injuries in multiple regions.
- In Sri Lanka, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has warned of a nationwide strike unless the government restores doctors’ holiday allowances to previous levels.
