National Update

• The Centre notified the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Amendment Rules, 2025. The Ministry of Electronics and IT said that Aadhaar Authentication has been expanded to government and private entities for providing various services in the public interest.
• The Centre announced the addition of four new Ramsar sites in India, taking the tally to 89.
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh today. Similar conditions are also expected in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry for the next 2 days.
• India’s real GDP is estimated to grow by 6.4 percent in the financial year 2025, and the growth is likely to range between 6.3 and 6.8 percent in the financial year 2026. This was projected in the Economic Survey presented by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in both Houses of Parliament.
• Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) Dr. V. Ananth Nageswaran has said that agriculture is the sector of the future, as there is enough scope to raise the contribution of agriculture by 0.75 percent to one percent in terms of GDP growth.
• Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacted with the secretaries and the senior officials of the Finance Ministry involved in the budget-making process at her office in North Block in New Delhi.
• The government has approved the participation of the Indian contingent at the 9th Asian Winter Games 2025, to be held from 7th to 14th February in Harbin, China.

International Updates

• Headline inflation in Sri Lanka, as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index, dropped to minus 4 percent in January. The year-on-year inflation was recorded at minus 1.7 percent in December.
• Romania recorded 133,635 cases of acute respiratory infections and eight flu-related deaths in the week from January 20 to 26.
• The Swiss government is ending its development aid programmes for Bangladesh, Albania and Zambia. This decision comes after the Swiss parliament allocated less funding for foreign aid in December than the government had requested.
• The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new guidelines recommending the switch from regular table salt to potassium-enriched salt substitutes as part of efforts to combat hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases.
• United States President Donald Trump has once again warned BRICS nations and threatened them with 100 per cent tariffs on their exports if they try to replace the US dollar as the main currency in global trade.

Sports Updates

• Former world no.1 shuttlers Kidambi Srikanth and Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian crashed out of the Thailand Masters Badminton tournament after losing their respective men’s singles quarterfinal matches in Bangkok.
• The government has approved the participation of the Indian contingent at the 9th Asian Winter Games 2025, to be held from 7th to 14th February in Harbin, China.
• In the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup, defending champions India thrashed England by 9 wickets in the second semifinal in Kuala Lumpur to seal a spot in the final. India will face South Africa in the title clash on Sunday.
• South Africa qualified for their first ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup 2025 decider following an impressive five-wicket triumph over Australia in the first semi-final at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.
