National Updates

• The Government notified an amendment to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, to provide relief to users of National Expressways that are only partially operational. The amended rules will come into effect from the 15th of this month.

• Indian Railways has initiated fast-track action for the expeditious implementation of the newly announced Dankuni -Surat dedicated freight corridor (DFC). The implementation of this corridor was announced in the Union Budget 2026-27.

• The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared proposals worth nearly 3.60 lakh crore rupees, to enhance the capability of the Armed Forces. The Defence Ministry has informed that Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) was accorded for the procurement of Multi Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) Rafale,etc.

• The Parliament has passed the Industrial Relations Code (Amendment) Bill, 2026 with the Rajya Sabha approving it. Earlier in the day the Lok Sabha had passed the legislation.

• President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be on a state visit to India from 18th of this month till 22nd February on the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming India-AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

• Counting of votes is underway across Bangladesh following the conclusion of polling in the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the referendum on the July National Charter. Voting was held from 7:30am to 4:30pm in 299 constituencies nationwide.

• Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered authorities to set up a medical board to examine jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s eyes following a report about vision loss in one of them.

• In Kosovo, Parliament has approved a new government led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, ending a yearlong political deadlock in the Balkan country. Lawmakers backed Kurti’s Cabinet with 66 votes for and 49 against in the 120-member assembly.

• United States Energy Secretary Chris Wright has arrived in Venezuela for a firsthand assessment of the country’s oil industry. Wright met Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez at the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas.

• Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met US President Donald Trump at the White House. The meeting lasted about three hours and was held entirely behind closed doors. Netanyahu did not comment afterwards. However, President Trump later called the meeting very good in a post on Truth Social.

• Two-time Olympian Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar set a new world record en route to winning the gold medal in the men’s 50 metre rifle 3 positions event at the Asian Shooting Championships 2026 in New Delhi.

• The players of the Pakistan hockey team were forced to spend several hours on the road upon reaching the Australian capital Canberra, as their hotel bookings were cancelled after the Pakistan Hockey Federation failed to pay the bill due to a lack of funds.

• In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced an innovative scheme offering 70 percent subsidy support for homestays in preparation for the National Games 2027. The announcement was made during the Land Handover ceremony for the proposed five-star Holiday Inn Resort.
