National Updates

• The government has notified the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, which will come into effect from 1st April this year. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said that the revised rules will integrate the principles of circular economy and extended producer responsibility.

• India’s industrial production growth, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), surged to its highest level in over two years at 7.8 per cent in December 2025 on an annual basis. The IIP continued its rising trend last month, edging higher from the upwardly revised rate of 7.2 per cent.

• NITI Aayog launched Sampoornata Abhiyan 2.0, a three-month campaign aimed at achieving saturation of critical development indicators in Aspirational Districts and Aspirational Blocks across the country.

• Ayush Ministry today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ayush Export Promotion Council (AYUSHEXCIL) and a quick commerce company in New Delhi to facilitate structured online access to Ayush medicines and wellness products across the country.

International Updates

• Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, affirmed that the Kingdom will not permit its airspace or territory to be used for any military actions against Iran from any party, regardless of their origin.

• A South Korean court has sentenced former First Lady Kim Keon Hee to one year and eight months in prison for accepting bribes from the Unification Church.

• India and Saudi Arabia comprehensively reviewed the ongoing security cooperation in the third meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Security Working Group under the Political, Consular and Security Cooperation Committee of the Strategic Partnership Council in Riyadh.

• Japan’s last pair of pandas returned to China, leaving Japan without the lovable bears for the first time in half a century. China first sent pandas to Japan in 1972. Beijing has long used the bears as a diplomatic tool- a sign of goodwill and an extension of the country’s soft power.

• The case against former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe was heard at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, where former presidential secretary Saman Ekanayake was ordered to be remanded until February 11 in connection with alleged misuse of public funds.
