1. Duration and Composition

Full Version: The full version of the National Anthem takes 52 seconds to play. It consists of five stanzas.

Short Version: A short version, consisting of the first and last lines of the anthem, takes about 20 seconds.

2. Standing in Attention

Standing Respectfully: When the National Anthem is played or sung, everyone present should stand at attention as a mark of respect.

Exceptions: This rule does not apply to those who are physically incapacitated, children, or those involved in specific duties (like military personnel in certain circumstances).

3. Occasions for Playing the National Anthem

The National Anthem should be played or sung on appropriate occasions such as:

Independence Day (August 15)

Republic Day (January 26)

Public functions of national importance

School assemblies and events

Government events and formal functions

4. Prohibition on Commercial Use

The National Anthem or any part of it should not be used for:

Commercial purposes, such as in advertisements.

Played as part of a dramatized performance.

For any activity which demeans its dignity.

5. Respect for the Anthem

Dignity and Honor: The National Anthem should be sung or played with full respect. It should not be sung or played in any manner that would be considered disrespectful.

Proper Occasions: It must be played on occasions where formal and solemn respect can be shown, and it must not be played or sung casually.

No Disruption: During the singing or playing of the anthem, any disruptions, talking, or walking are considered disrespectful.

6. Playing in Cinemas

As per Supreme Court guidelines, the National Anthem was previously played in cinema halls before the screening of films, though this rule was later modified to make it optional.

7. Use in Films, TV Programs, and Radio

The National Anthem may be used in films, television programs, or radio programs provided it is presented in a manner that upholds dignity and does not trivialize it.

Any alteration to the anthem, its words, or its composition is prohibited.

8. Misuse and Penalties

Insults to the National Anthem: Anyone who intentionally prevents or causes a disturbance to the singing of the National Anthem, or shows disrespect, can be penalized under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. This includes:

Not standing when the anthem is played (unless exempted for a valid reason).

Engaging in any conduct that shows disrespect.

Punishment: Violation of these rules can lead to imprisonment for up to three years, a fine, or both.

9. Singing by Citizens

The National Anthem can be sung by any citizen with proper respect, especially on national days and ceremonies.

The anthem can be sung solo, in chorus, or played by a band, provided the dignity of the anthem is maintained.

10. Conduct for Government Employees

Government employees, police, and military personnel are expected to show respect by standing in attention whenever the anthem is played.

Specific rules apply to military and police personnel regarding salutes and posture while the anthem is played.

11. Singing in Schools

Schools are encouraged to teach children the National Anthem and its importance.

The anthem should be sung in the correct tempo and pronunciation, with due reverence, as part of school assemblies or important events.

12. Code of Conduct

The National Anthem should not be sung or played in a manner that could be seen as mocking or derogatory.

All should remain silent and respectful while the anthem is being played, and any movement or distraction should be avoided.
