Thumbelina

The story begins with an old woman who longs for a child of her own. She visits a good fairy who gives her a barleycorn seed and tells her to plant it. From the seed, a delicate flower blooms, revealing a tiny girl no bigger than a thumb. The old woman names her Thumbelina.

Thumbelina’s life takes a dramatic turn when she is kidnapped by a toad who wants her to marry her son. The toad takes Thumbelina to her home in a pond, but Thumbelina is deeply unhappy there. She longs to escape and return to the world she knows.

One night, while Thumbelina is sleeping, a kind field mouse discovers her and takes her back to her home in the field. The field mouse introduces Thumbelina to her friend, a handsome and kind-hearted swallow who is injured and unable to fly. Thumbelina takes care of the swallow, and they become friends.

As spring arrives, Thumbelina’s life becomes even more adventurous. The swallow helps her build a boat out of a tulip petal, and they embark on a journey down the river. Along the way, they encounter various creatures, including a maybug who wants to marry Thumbelina and a group of field mice who are preparing for a wedding.

Eventually, Thumbelina and the swallow arrive at the warm lands of the south. The swallow is healed and can fly once again. He offers Thumbelina the chance to join him on his journey, but Thumbelina realizes that her true home is in the fields and meadows where she belongs. She bids farewell to the swallow and continues her adventures, knowing that she will always carry the memories of her remarkable journey in her heart.

“Thumbelina” is a timeless tale that celebrates the beauty of nature, the power of friendship, and the courage to follow one’s dreams, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.
