What is CAUSATIVE VERBS?

A verb is called causative when we get the work done by someone else or someone is made to do the work. There are four ways of making the causative of the verb.

Causative Verb क्या हैं (causative verb in Hindi) – जब कार्य किसी अन्य के द्वारा करवाया जाता है या अन्य के द्वारा किया हुआ प्राप्त किया जाता है, तो क्रिया को Causative रूप में (कारण बनने के रूप में) प्रयोग किया जाता है । इसे व्यक्त करने के चार तरीके हैं |

What is a causative sentence?

The causative is the verb that is used to indicate that one person causes another person to do something for the first person. One can cause somebody to do something for him/her by asking, paying, requesting, or forcing the person.

The causative verbs are: let (allow, permit), have, get, make (force, require), and help.

How many causative verbs are there- There are four ways of making the causative of the verb.

Causative verbs formula 

  1. Cause + Object + to + Verb I (Infinitive)
  2. Make + Object + Verb I (bare Infinitive)
  3. Get + Object + Verb III (Past Participle)
  4. Have + Object + Verb III (Past Participle)

 

Causative verbs formula with an example-

1. Cause + Object + to + Verb I (Infinitive)

मैंने उससे एक पत्र लिखवाया।

I caused him to write a letter.

(He wrote a letter and I told or inspired him to do so.)

मैंने अपनी बहन से खाना बनवाया।

I caused my sister to cook food.

उसने नौकर से पानी मँगवाया।

He caused the servant to bring water.

2. Make + Object + Verb I (bare Infinitive)

मैंने उससे एक पत्र लिखवाया।

I made him write a letter.

मैंने अपनी बहन से खाना बनवाया।

I made my sister cook food.

उसने नौकर से पानी मँगवाया।

3. Get + Object + Verb III (Past Participle)

मैंने पत्र डलवाया।

I got the letter posted.

(I caused someone to post the letter.)

मैंने खाना पकवाया।

I got the food cooked.

मैंने फर्नीचर सुधरवाया।

I got the furniture repaired.

मैंने अपना घर पुतवाया।

I got my house white-washed.

4. Have + Object + Verb III (Past Participle)

मैंने पत्र डलवाया।

I had the letter posted.

मैंने खाना बनवाया।

I had the food cooked.

मैंने मकान बनवाया।

I had the house built

Causative verbs exercises

Make the causative sentences using ’cause’ and ‘make’ separately

1. I/her/drink/water.

2. He/Sheela/sing/songs.

3. The principal/teacher/teach grammar.

4. He/me/wash/the clothes.

5. He/me/tell/the story.

6. I/him/go/to/school.

Ans –

1. (a) I caused her to drink water.

(b) I made her drink water.

2 (a) He caused Sheela to sing a song.

(b) He made Sheela sing songs.

3. (a) The Principal caused the teacher to teach grammar.

(b) The Principal made the teacher teach grammar.

4. (a) He caused me to wash the clothes.

(b) He made me wash the clothes.

5. (a) He caused me to tell the story.

(b) He made me tell the story.

6. (a) I made him go to school.

(b) I caused him to go to school.
